I began my career in clay as a functional potter. I still love making pots, but over the years, I have been increasingly drawn toward non-functional elements for them. I also began making over-sized platters. As my decoration matured, I wanted to make bigger and bigger platters. However, I maxed out at 50 lbs. of clay, giving me 31”-32” diameter pieces. That was just not big enough. I wanted a much bigger canvas to play with. I turned to slab work as a solution.

I am no longer limited by the wheel. I am now able to create to whatever space challenges me. I’m not sure where this new work will take me, but the expanse of my always changing clay canvas is exciting. It allows me to say things I’ve never been able to.

My son, Aaron, started working on the wall pieces with me about three years ago. He is a student at Johnson State College in VT majoring in art. He has grown up around clay and brings his creative energy to our collaborations and to his own work.

These wall pieces represent the direction in which Aaron and I are moving. They range in size from 2'x2' to 2'x4' to 4'x8' to 6'x15', with the possibility of much larger murals. They are made of stoneware clay, high fired in gas kilns to over 2300 degrees F in a reduction atmosphere and are available in a variety of glaze combinations. They are intended to bring dynamic design to larger rooms, offices, and corporate situations that will benefit from this sculptural treatment.
